Discover the region’s ceramic heritage
In North Limburg, part of the region’s history is literally buried in the ground. Around Tegelen, Belfeld, Reuver and Milsbeek, clay was used to make pots, roof tiles, floor tiles and flowerpots. For a long time, this work set the rhythm of village life. The clay was extracted, shaped and fired in hot kilns. The finished products were then sent to homes and businesses both at home and abroad.
In various places, you can still see and feel that history. At the Tiendschuur Tegelen Ceramics Centre, you’ll discover ceramics in all sorts of forms. You’ll see work by ceramicists and learn more about clay, glazes, techniques and kilns. A lovely day out for lovers of art and craftsmanship. Fancy a bite to eat? At Restaurant SOBER, an old ceramics site has been given a new lease of life. Here, you can sit down to a special meal after visiting the Ceramics Centre.
Milsbeek, too, once boasted a thriving pottery industry. At Museum De oude Pottenbakkerij, you can see how pots and flowerpots were made in the past and learn more about local craftsmanship. The machines, materials and stories bring the work of yesteryear to life.
