Limburgs Vlaaibakkerij Museum

Experience bakery Ard Gerards-Steeghs houses Horst's tastiest museum

With his passionate tours, Ard lovingly passes on the tradition of this culinary Limburg heritage to future generations. You'll hear the stories, smell the dough and before you know it you'll feel like getting started yourself. You can. During a workshop, you bake your own Limburg vlaai (flan) at this nostalgic spot. The origins of Limburg vlaai go back to the Middle Ages. Bakers baked round loaves of yeast dough with a raised rim, filled with fruit. This way, the fruit kept longer. At Gerards-Steeghs bakery in Horst, this original recipe is still respected to this day. Since 2024, Limburgse vlaai has even been recognised as a European regional product with a Protected Geographical Indication. Only flans baked in Limburg according to fixed rules may be called real Limburg flan.
