Gennep is located exactly where the Maas and Niers rivers meet. And you can feel it. Water, history and nature merge here. In the fortified town itself, it is easy to walk past old streets, the Martinus tower and places where the past is still visible. Take a look at the Genneper Huys, where the stories are there for the taking, or dive into a shop on the market square.
Here, you will browse among cute boutiques and speciality shops. Small, local and with attention. Come and sample it and then taste the atmosphere right away. If you walk out of town, you are in the middle of the Maasheggen. A landscape found nowhere else. Winding hedges, narrow paths and a view that automatically calms you down. Just at your own pace. That is Gennep.
You'll see that 'tis just right in Gennep.
Fancy a day out in Gennep? Then this is the place to be. Then follow the Nierskade towards the greenery or hop in a canoe and see Gennep from the water. If you're looking for a bit more life, stay in the centre around the market, Niersstraatje and Zandstraat. Rent a canoe from Kanook.nu in Ottersum for a trip down the Niers, or rent a bike from the Cycle Center of Center Parcs Het Heijderbos in Heijen (tip: check in advance if they have bikes available) and explore the Maasduinen and the routes along the Meuse. If you're looking for a good lunch in the city centre, Lunchcafé eXtra on Niersstraat is a fine stop. You eat well there, and as a fun fact: the café also has a social role with day care, adapted work and internships in special education. If you are looking for a place for drinks or dinner, then De Stadsherberg in Zandstraat, Gennep's living room, with a terrace, special beer and dishes that are prepared using local produce as much as possible, is the place to go.
Should it be just outside the city centre, then De Fabriek is a great tip, with its own atmosphere and a nod to Gennep's industrial past. And if you want to continue on to Ottersum, then Bij Koos is a fine address for lunch or dinner in a warm, welcoming setting.
Gennep originated on a strategic spot where the Niers flows into the Meuse and grew into a fortified town in the Middle Ages. You can still see that past in the Genneper Huys, the Martinus tower and the old centre. Gennep not only played a role in trade and defence, but also in the Eighty Years' War, with the siege of the Genneper Huys in 1641 as a famous chapter.
World War II also left deep marks. In 1944 and 1945, Gennep was in the middle of the battlefield surrounding Market Garden and the subsequent liberation, with attacks on the railway station, the railway workshop and the Page paper factory, among others. Those wanting to see more of this can use the Archeo Route Limburg app: with it, you can discover archaeological sites and historical stories on location in Gennep. There are also a Liberation Route 1944-1945 and a Liberation Route through and around Gennep.
