The Mookerheide near Mook has a long history. An important route ran here as early as Roman times. Most famous is the Battle of Mookerheide in 1574, during the Eighty Years' War. Spanish troops defeated the army of Louis and Henry of Nassau here. So when you walk here, you literally walk on historic ground, in the middle of today's nature

Around the Mookerheide you will find several beautiful cycling routes. For example, choose the cycle route Mook en Maas, which takes you through the varied landscape of Mookerheide and Plasmolen, with beautiful stretches along the river Maas. Or opt for the cycle route Mookerheide, a trip of some 30 kilometres straight through the characteristic and nature-rich area.

At Restaurant Sjapo in Plasmolen, enjoy refined dishes in an atmospheric setting. Dining at the beautiful Jachtslot Mookerheide in Molenhoek is also a culinary experience. In Middelaar, De Loopplank is an absolute must. And in Mook, too, you will find plenty of cosy addresses for tasteful dining.

Tip for hikers: walk the Twee Schansenroute on Mookerheide. This circular walk of about 5 kilometres takes you past the area's main attractions. You pass Landgoed Mookerheide with its characteristic hunting lodge, the historic greenhouses and gardens, vast heathlands and both the Heumense Schans and the Mookerschans. Along the way, you will also be treated to magnificent viewpoints over the landscape.

The history of the artists' colony in Plasmolen tells of a 'little paradise' in northern Limburg. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, painters found their inspiration here, attracted by the untouched nature, the special light and the rolling landscape of the lateral moraine. Plasmolen is considered the only full-fledged painters' colony in Limburg and one of the few artists' colonies in the Netherlands.
