This is one of those places where you explore together. Perfect if you love history, beautiful views and special stories. Fun with children thanks to the treasure hunts and interactive elements, but just as nice if you want to wander quietly as a couple or are looking for a cultural outing.
When to visit?
On a sunny day, this is extra enjoyable, as the views over the Meuse River and the village are truly impressive. But even on a chilly or rainy day, the castle is just as atmospheric inside, with stories that take you through time. Ideal as a (half) day out in between.
What to expect.
You will discover a castle more than a thousand years old that has been rebuilt with modern architecture, bringing together old and new. During your visit, you will walk through different rooms full of stories and look out over the Meuse valley. Did you know that this castle once started as a watchtower around the year 1000? You can still feel that in every stone.
You usually spend an hour to a couple of hours here, depending on whether you take a guided tour or look around on your own. The atmosphere is peaceful, historic and at the same time surprisingly modern. Parking is available nearby in the village and from there you can walk right up. Due to the height differences, not everything is easily accessible, but much of the castle is accessible. Dogs are welcome outside, but not usually inside. For a drink or something tasty, you can often visit the grounds themselves.
When are you welcome?
You are usually welcome from Wednesday to Sunday between 11am and 5pm. In high season, the castle is open more often and there are additional activities and tours.

A surprising castle with a stunning view

From the outside, you can immediately see how the old and the new come together here. Inside, we discovered the history through personal stories, which really brought the castle to life. The children, too, kept looking around with curiosity. Afterwards, we spent a little while on the terrace enjoying the view over the River Meuse. A lovely and varied stop in Kessel.

Absolutely. Children discover the castle’s history through stories, activities and changing interactive exhibitions. For example, there are regular exhibitions on nocturnal animals and dinosaurs on the programme. This makes a visit more than just a look around an old building.
Almost all areas of the castle are wheelchair accessible. There is a lift at the entrance at car park level, and there are several parking spaces for visitors with disabilities right next to the castle. Ring the bell at the green door marked ‘lift’, and a member of staff will assist you.
Dogs are not allowed inside the castle. They are welcome in the castle gardens, provided they are kept on a lead. It is best to notify the venue in advance if you are bringing an assistance dog, so that it is clear what facilities are available.
