Preuf & Praotlokaal De Klep

In the historic Keizerstraatje, pop into De Klep for a speciality beer, lunch and a good chat. The music plays softly in the background, the drinks menu is ready and, in winter, the wood-burning stove crackles. This is what Venlo’s cosy atmosphere feels like – without any fuss.

Visit De Klep

Who is this a real getaway for?

De Klep is ideal for friends who want to catch up at length, beer enthusiasts keen to sample different beers, and visitors who want to linger a while after an afternoon in Venlo. It’s also the perfect spot for a quiet lunch, a High-Beer or an evening of comedy, jazz or a quiz.

When will you visit?

On a sunny afternoon, you’ll find a spot on the terrace. As soon as it gets a bit cooler outside, the cosy pub with its wood-burning stove feels all the more welcoming. De Klep is also the perfect spot for a rainy day in the city or a long evening when nobody’s in a hurry to go home.

What to expect.

At Café De Klep, it’s all about tasting and chatting. The music stays in the background, so that a good conversation naturally takes centre stage. Inside, you’ll find the warm atmosphere of a traditional pub; on mild days, you can find a spot on the terrace. The beer menu features nearly a hundred beers from various breweries. Not a beer drinker? Then there’s also wine, jenever, whisky, Venlo liqueurs, coffee and other drinks.

From midday onwards, you can pop in for lunch or a late bite to eat. The small menu is available until 8.00 pm and the drinks menu until 11.30 pm. It features familiar pub classics and dishes that go well with beer, such as stewed meat and fish and chips in beer batter. Vegetarian options are also available.

If you’d like to compare different flavours side by side, book a High-Beer for four or more people. Groups of ten or more can opt for a guided beer tasting. Did you know that ‘De Klep’ refers to the old beer mug with a lid that the people of Venlo used to drink from? In local parlance, a ‘klep’ came to mean a glass of beer. That bit of Venlo’s history fits in perfectly with a café where chatting, tasting and sitting back and relaxing still go hand in hand.

Why this will be your favourite stop in the region

De Klep is situated in the historic centre of Venlo, on the old Keizerstraatje, also known locally as Floddergats. The former monastery church, Domani, is nearby. This means you can simply stroll in from the city centre for a coffee, lunch or a drink. The gentle music, expertise in beer and space for a chat give this place that cosy North Limburg feel.

Practical info

Allow about one to one and a half hours for coffee or lunch. For a High-Beer, tasting session or event, two to three hours is more enjoyable. Venlo feels both lively and historic here, with shops and charming streets within walking distance.

When are the gates open?

You’re welcome from 12 noon to midnight, Wednesday to Sunday. De Klep is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The kitchen serves dishes from the à la carte menu until 8.00 pm; according to official information, orders from the drinks menu can be placed until 11.30 pm.

Our tip

Book a High-Beer for a minimum of four people and arrive a little early for a leisurely stroll through the old town centre. You’ll be served four special beers paired with four matching homemade snacks. The High-Beer can be booked until 7.00 pm at the latest.
