This is North Limburg: convivial, grounded, happy
Welcome to North Limburg. Here we enjoy the ordinary, are collectors of golden moments and always say 'yes' to a piece of flan. It's a place where the clock ticks a bit slower, but time flies by at the same time. Just because it's so cosy. This is typical North Limburg...
...Where burgundy enjoyment is very common.
It's been instilled in us, the Burgundian life. Long dinners, an extra scoop on the plate. Everything tastes better when you experience it together, we think. If it is fresh from the land and freshly made, we enjoy it the most. From deep purple berries from the bushes of Melderslo to warm flan from the village baker. And we haven't even mentioned liquid gold yet. With the Hertog Jan brewery in Arcen, we make sure it keeps flowing well, no matter which North Limburg terrace you plop down on. Here, enjoyment is not a moment that dissipates. It is how we live.
...Where myths and legends are alive and well.
'It's in our blood, the love of traditions and strong stories. Come and see Beesel: 'a village where the dragon plays the leading role. In National Park De Groote Peel, there are still whispers about the Peel Knight. He is said to still watch over the moor. And have you ever heard of Kiste Trui, the Treasure Hunter of Mookerheide? We love to show you our traditions. Be it Vasteloavend or the Gennep Rifle Festival. Dive in and come and experience it. Here we don't keep our stories in books, but in the people themselves.
...Where nature is our greatest resource.
'It feels like a gift, the nature we venture into in North Limburg. And we are only too happy to make use of it. With the many challenging hiking and cycling routes, we can at least stretch our legs enough. Typical of nature in North Limburg? The variety. Where in National Park De Groote Peel you are in high moorland, on Mookerheide you are on vast heathlands. The Maasduinen are unique: they form the longest river dune belt in our country. Here, nature is not something you quickly pass through. It is something you really spend some time in.
...Where stories of the past are still being told.
In North Limburg, the past does not lie still. It walks with you, between ancient walls and quiet fields. The stories are not grand and compelling, but modest and real. They are in the age-old stones of Huys ter Horst Castle. But also in the many wayside chapels, built to pray at all times. Stories can also be found in Venray, where an old monastery tells of a time when psychiatry was still behind closed doors. And have you heard of Monastery Village Steyl? There you walk through monastery gardens and past mission houses that preserve stories from all over the world. Follow the Archaeo Route or the Liberation Route and you will see for yourself: here, history is never far away.
...Where conviviality is a way of life.
It is in the little things. Here, we greet each other on the street and make time for a chat. At the weekly market in Venlo, you are addressed as if you have been coming there for years. Have a taste and before you know it you have a bag full of goodies and a good story. In Mook and Middelaar, you spread your rug along the river Maas. Feet in the grass, head in the sun: nothing more to do. And in Well or Afferden, sit down on the terrace, where the tall tales fly back and forth. Join us for another round?
...Where borders are connected.
In North Limburg, the border is not a barrier, but a bridge. Our German neighbours come here for the market, we go for a schnitzel or 'n walk just across the border. In Mook and Middelaar, you walk straight into Germany without really noticing it. And did you know that Venlo is full of old smuggling routes? Where butter used to be smuggled, we now share culture - and fine cycle paths for pedalling around. Borders? They only make it richer here.
...Where water abounds.
Here, the Meuse meanders through the country like a blue lifeline. Always close by and always on the move. Rent a boat in Venray and float away. Prefer something more active? Paddle down the Niers in Bergen in a canoe, amid the greenery and twittering. Golden tip: take the foot and bike ferry between Lottum and Arcen. Rowing, boating, fishing or just gazing... Water is a source of life's joy for us.
That's real gold: moments that stay with you - Experience it in North Limburg. Every day.
This is where you feel little happiness all the way down to your toes. They are moments that linger because they have become warm memories. Whether walking or cycling, floating along the Meuse or grabbing a terrace: Northern Limburg feels like coming home.
