Summer isn’t over yet. The days are still long, dining al fresco is often still possible, and meanwhile the first harvest is starting to come in from the fields. A lovely time to get away for a bit. In North Limburg, it’s very easy to fill a weekend like this. Paddle along the Niers, walk around the Reindersmeer or sample whatever’s fresh from the garden at the moment. Then enjoy a delicious meal and spend the night somewhere.
We’ve selected our favourite spots across all eight municipalities in North Limburg. Not because you have to tick them all off in a single day. Quite the opposite. Pick a few to visit, stay the night somewhere and take your time. That’s in keeping with ‘taking time to unwind’: being outdoors, enjoying good food and savouring the season without rushing. We recommend arriving on Friday, if you can. Then Saturday will immediately feel like a full day off.

1. Purple heather and still waters in Mook and Middelaar
On Friday evening, unpack your bag in an outdoor hotel room at Herberg ’t Zwaantje. The cottages are situated on the edge of the woods, are designed for two people and have their own wooden terrace. Leave the rest of the first evening free. A cup of coffee on your terrace and the rustling of the trees make for a perfect start to your weekend.
Set your alarm for an early walk across the Mookerheide. In August, the heath can turn a beautiful shade of purple. Around sunrise, the light is soft and the paths are often quieter. Can’t manage to get up early? Then go at sunset. That way, you’ll see the area bathed in beautiful, low light. Afterwards, take a stroll past the greenhouses and the organic pick-your-own and vegetable garden at Jachtslot Mookerheide. Pop in for lunch and feel free to ask what’s fresh from the garden that day. We recommend the vegetable quiche, filled with fresh vegetables from their own greenhouse.
Later, you can head out onto the Mookerplas on a SUP from SUP Yourself. From the water, you’ll experience the Mookerplas in a slightly different way. For dinner, Restaurant MARE is our culinary recommendation. We recommend opting for the Vegetable Festival, featuring freshly cooked seasonal vegetables. However, the beetroot with chervil, Jerusalem artichoke and beurre blanc is also a perfect choice for this time of year.
Will you be there on 19 or 20 September 2026? Then head to Keramisto on the Mookerplas. Here you’ll meet a hundred ceramicists and watch demonstrations showing how clay is shaped.

2. Paddling and tasting in Gennep
Off to Gennep. At Parc Boulée, you’ll sleep right in the middle of the fields. Choose the Igloo for its large windows and views. Or, our personal favourite, the Yurt Bos if a private sauna sounds just the ticket. A lovely spot for two people looking to get away together for a while.
On Saturday, hop into a KANOOK canoe and let the Niers set the pace. After a paddle, settle down at MAND! on the deck or in the grass. Here you can order coffee, wine and fresh sandwiches. A personal tip is the salmon salad sandwich.
Would you like to experience the harvest season in North Limburg for yourself? Then cycle the ‘Smaakparelroute’. Along the way, you’ll pass local producers selling, for example, herbs, eggs and fruit. The entire route is 28 kilometres long, but you can also cycle just part of it. Prefer to walk? Fancy a getaway for two? At Parc Boulée in Ven-Zelderheide, you can sleep surrounded by greenery in a unique hideaway for two. From a yurt to a panoramic dome or a waterside cottage with a sauna or hot tub? There’s plenty of choice.
3. Dive into the heart of the Maasduinen in Bergen
This weekend, let’s take a break from the well-known Reindersmeer circuit. Stay at De Vertoeverij in Afferden, a holiday cottage for two with its own garden. From the cottage, you can look out over a Maasduin and walk straight into the national park.
Start your weekend at Boscafé ’t Rimpelt. Three walking routes of approximately 6, 7 and 10 kilometres start here. We’d recommend the 7.5-kilometre route. That way, you’ll have time to stop and take in the sights along the way before enjoying a leisurely lunch. Our top pick from the menu is the ‘Bosplateau veggie’, featuring soup, sourdough bread, vegetarian croquettes, caprese and a fried egg with cheese. Be sure to check the chalkboard too, as the dish of the moment is even more perfect for late summer.
Pick up some seasonal fruit, vegetables or other local produce later on at the Cornelissen Farm Shop in Nieuw-Bergen. Take it back to your holiday cottage and enjoy it in the garden that evening. That way, the harvest simply becomes part of your evening. On Sunday, go for a short walk on the De Hamert Estate and then enjoy a pancake at Jachthut op den Hamer. That’s all you need for a relaxing Sunday.

4. Country estates, art and long dinners in Venray
The Droomboerderijtje in Merselo is situated on a quiet country lane, close to the woods. The two flats have their own entrance and terrace. This makes it a perfect choice for the months of September and October, when the leaves begin to change colour again.
Take a walk through the Geijsteren Estate and then head over to Hoeve de Boogaard. Here, a multi-course menu featuring seasonal produce is served. Our favourite is the dessert featuring blueberries, panna cotta, sorbet and meringue. Fresh and creamy, with a flavour that perfectly suits these last warm days. The menu changes, so feel free to ask what’s on offer at the time.
Be sure to visit the Odapark’s Beeldenbos too. The artworks are scattered amongst the trees and the park is open to the public. Until 31 October 2026, you can also follow the GEWORTELD audio forest walk there. Still got some time? Then enjoy a drink on the terrace at Bottlez in Venray. The wines by the glass change every week, so feel free to ask the enthusiastic staff which wine best suits the late summer at that moment.

5. Discover a vineyard and the Pieterpad in Horst aan de Maas
At Gasterie Lieve Hemel in Sevenum, you can eat and stay under one roof. Choose a garden room or a gîte if you’d like to be close to nature. Our tip for a relaxing first evening is the ‘Plank Lieve Hemel’, a sharing platter full of hot and cold seasonal dishes. It’s lovely to share whilst the evening draws to a peaceful close.
Book a wine safari at Zaerums Genieten on a Saturday. You’ll stroll through the vineyard, take a look inside the winery and taste wine straight from the barrel. The safari lasts about one and a half to two hours. Prefer to have your hands amongst the flowers? Then pay a visit to Pluktuin De Peel in Griendtsveen. You can pick your own flowers there, and on some days workshops are also held.
On a Sunday, set off from Natuurlijck Kaldenbroek for a peaceful stretch of the Pieterpad, followed by lunch in the brasserie. The Handje Gezond blueberry farm in America is a lovely place to visit for – as the name suggests – blueberry products. Arriving a bit later in the day? No problem: the farm shop is open day and night.

6. Explore orchards and forests in Peel en Maas
Book a ParcPod at Kapèlkeshof in Grashoek. The wooden cottages are designed for two, have an en-suite bathroom and a covered terrace. Tip: combine your stay with a wine tasting. You can walk to the vineyard and sample three wines from their own vineyard, accompanied by a platter of nibbles.
Out and about with the children? Then opt for a glamping tent at BoeBaDoe FarmCamps. You’ll sleep amongst the cows and chickens, whilst the children play in the farmyard, meet the cows or explore the vegetable garden. Our tip for the morning? Collect fresh eggs together from the henhouse and fry them in the tent’s little kitchen.
During your green weekend away, be sure to take a walk through the Heldense Bossen. The full ‘101 Little Hills’ route is 10.5 kilometres long, but you can also walk a shorter section of the route. 7. Sleeping in nature and enjoying seasonal food in Venlo
Campland Arcen is your green base near Venlo. The nature pods are situated next to a former sand and gravel quarry that has been returned to nature. Those looking for just a little more comfort can opt for a Panorama XL pod with its own bathroom and kitchenette.
Take a walk through the Arcen Castle Gardens on Saturday. From 3 to 7 September 2026, during ‘Bloemig! ’, the park will be brimming with floral art, summer blooms and demonstrations. So, whilst you’re out and about, do take a moment to sit on a bench and don’t automatically choose the quickest route. There’s plenty of time.
Make Restaurant SOBER in Tegelen your culinary highlight. This restaurant is situated at the ZAVEL wine estate. Vegetables, herbs and fruit from the restaurant’s own garden form the basis of the menu here. What ends up on your plate can therefore change from day to day. Our tip: let the kitchen decide the menu and allow yourself to be surprised. And don’t forget to order the accompanying wine pairing.

8. Art, woodland and local flavours in Beesel
Enjoy a wonderfully peaceful night’s sleep at the ‘t Eyveld holiday home on the outskirts of Beesel. The three CUBE holiday homes can accommodate up to four people and each has its own terrace and garden. After arriving, you can go for a short cycle around Ronckenstein. This peaceful hamlet near Reuver consists of old farmhouses, narrow lanes and plenty of greenery.
Start your weekend at Risja Steeghs’ gallery in Rijkel. You can simply pop in on Fridays and Saturdays or book a workshop in advance. During the ceramics café, you can mould or paint an object yourself. Two hours with clay on your hands works surprisingly well when your head is still full of thoughts from home.
Next, head to Boscafé De Grens and walk into the Brachterwald. The forest lies just across the German border. The route across the Kahlberg’sche Heide is over eight kilometres, but you can turn back earlier if you wish. Our top pick from the menu at the Boscafé is the Panini Brachterwald, with chorizo, tomato tapenade and cheese. Prefer something typical of Limburg with your coffee? Then try a slice of rijstevlaai.
On Sunday 13 September 2026, the Smaakmarkt in Beesel will be the highlight of the weekend. Between 11.00 and 17.00, you can sample fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy products, drinks and other regional produce. Entry is completely free.

Frequently asked questions about late-summer holidays in North Limburg
The period from late August to early October is ideal for these routes. However, purple heather, ripe fruit and flowers cannot be arranged on demand. The weather determines when something blooms or can be harvested. You should therefore check the picking dates shortly before you set off.

Be sure to book your accommodation in advance. You should also book in advance for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, a city guide, the wine safari, workshops and popular restaurants. For markets and freely accessible nature areas, this is usually not necessary. At festivals, however, individual activities may require a ticket.

That’s possible, but it can quickly disrupt your planning. It’s better to choose one municipality and leave a half-day free now and then. Keramisto and the Brachterwald are the exceptions in this article. They lie just across a municipal or national border, but fit logically into a weekend in the area.
