North Limburg is not only thriving green, but also steeped in stories that whisper between marsh and heath. Legends still alive and myths steeped in mysticism. Are they fairy tales or stone-age stories? Fabulous fantasies or mostly wise words? In these seven places, you will dive into Limburg myths and legends. Then you can answer for yourself....

1. Kiste Trui: the Treasure Hunter of Mookerheide

If you look very closely at the ground on Mookerheide, you may see old footsteps in the earth. They are the footsteps of Kiste Trui, the Treasure Hunter of Mookerheide. Legend has it that Trui wandered the moors all her life to search for the treasure of Orange: a lost war chest after the battle on Mookerheide. While the mist covered the ground like a blanket and her feet disappeared deep into the mud, she kept on searching. Whether she ever found it? The fairy tale says she did, but that remains a closely guarded secret. Follow in the footsteps of Kiste Trui with a walk across the Mookerheide. Leave from Plasmolen, where the swampy Riethorst used to be: the place where Trui started her quest. Want to get a better idea of the mythical figure? Visit Mook's town hall square, where a statue of Kiste Trui stands. Could she still be digging somewhere?

2. Peel Knight: Ghost of the Bog

With its charming villages and thriving nature, National Park De Groote Peel is now a popular area. That was once different... Empty, black puddles were buried under the fog. Forest paths suddenly grew dense, leaving you lost in the dark. But what really gave the shivers? That people sometimes suddenly disappeared into the swamp. Dissolving into nothingness. So did a robber knight, plundering through Peel villages. For centuries, visitors to the Peel heard a harrowing cry of distress: the cry of the Ghost of the Bog. Did he really live? Or is he still alive? Nobody knows, except that it is rumoured that his golden helmet was fished out of the swamp in 1910. Near Helenaveen, the site of the find, you will find a monument recalling the helmet. If you want to get even closer to the Ghost of the Bog, venture out on the hiking trails in National Park De Groote Peel. Maybe you should just listen, and you'll hear the echo automatically....

3. De Vuurman: Limburg folklore figure

Somewhere between Arcen and Velden, he wandered around for a long time: the Fire Man. He carried 'n large boundary stone with him, taken away from its old spot. Because he took the boundary stone just like that, there was a curse on it: the stone was red-hot. 'Where shall I put it? Where shall I leave it?" cried the Fireman desperately. Only when the stone was put back in exactly the right place did the Fireman get rid of the curse. But did you cross his path on the way? Then you had to be on your guard.... At least, that is the legend whispered about in northern Limburg. In the village centre of Arcen, you can still find 'firemen' on poles with signposts. If you look closely, you will see that they carry a stone. Indeed: the glowing flint. How many do you count?

4. The Maasspook: the white haze on the bank

At De Maas, we like to come. For 'a walk along the shore, a picnic or a sup session on the water. A stream of fun, then, the Meuse. But on its banks it can also be quiet. Too quiet. And then when a white-clad figure suddenly appears, doom is already calling. 'Tis a woman, a drowned soul in search of... Yes, for what exactly? Sometimes she just floats around, sometimes she calls something to nothingness. Experience this shadowy fairy tale for yourself? Put on your brave shoes and walk along the Meuse. Near Blitterswijck, a mystical castle ruin stands on the bank: perhaps a place where the Maasspook used to haunt. Gennep and Ottersum, with their historic quaysides and misty floodplains, are just as mysterious. Were you looking for special with your family? You won't soon forget a ghostly walk along the Meuse.

  • Walk the Ommetje Blitterswijck: a 4.7-kilometre route that takes you along the Meuse and the ruins of Blitterswijck Castle. You can extend this route with a loop of over 5 kilometres if you wish.

5. Joris and the Dragon

There was once 'a city called Silena, and it was located in what is now Libya. In Silena, things were just not as peaceful as you might hope. A great dragon plagued it, seeking human sacrifice every day. When the princess of Silena was to be its next victim, the brave knight Joris came to her rescue. By killing the dragon, he freed both the princess and the city. A true hero, he now plays the leading role in one of the most famous myths and legends: Joris and the Dragon. The village of Beesel is the only place in the Netherlands where the legend of Joris and the Dragon is still alive. References to the dragon can be found everywhere: from facades to manhole covers. Once every seven years, Beesel is also the stage for the Dragon Sign spectacle, where the whole village immerses itself in the fairy tale of Joris and the Dragon. Make a note in your diary - especially if you want to experience special family outings with children in northern Limburg.

6. The Dragon Tower in Well

Yet another dragon tale – this time in Well, in the municipality Bergen. The Dragon Tower in Well still smoulders with the presence of a former inhabitant: a ferocious dragon. The ruin looms like a mysterious prop in the garden of Well Castle. Here, behind the old bricks, a ferocious dragon lived centuries ago. An indomitable beast that devoured many animals and people. When two knights returned from their crusade, they did not hesitate for a moment: with courage in their hearts and a razor-sharp lance in their hands, they slew the dragon. Thus, the people were freed from lives of fear. Anyone who isn’t put off by the fairy tale of the dragon can visit the Dragon Tower at Well Castle. The crumbling sections and dark patches on the walls make the idea that a dragon once lived here seem all the more plausible...

7. The gnomes of the Leudal

Where the Leu flows, in the Leudal, special creatures lived for a long time. Extraordinary little creatures, too. 'Tis said to be gnomes, after all. The story goes that they worked on a farm near the Zelsterbeek in the Leudal. In exchange for chores, the farmer fed them. Neatly, they returned their used plates, knives and forks the next day. Is it real? Several residents around the Leu say they have seen the gnomes. In any case, the stories have always been told around. If you walk along the Zelsterbeek, you might even walk in the (small) footsteps of the gnomes of the Leudal. Walk along the Elisabeth path? Then you are sure to come across the little mystical creatures. Along this gnome trail, there are tiny houses with gnomes in various places. Along the way, you will cross a footbridge, climb a climbing tree and discover a tree trunk. Extra fun if you are looking for special family outings with children in North Limburg.
