Are you coming to celebrate autumn holidays in North Limburg? Here are the best activities you can enjoy together during this cosy season. From a spooky fun visit to Halloween in Toverland to wine tasting in the middle of the Maasduinen.

These are our favourite activities during the autumn holidays in North Limburg:

  1. Scares during Halloween in Toverland
  2. A trip back in time at the De Locht open-air museum
  3. Autumn festival at Arcen Castle Gardens
  4. Most beautiful autumn walk in Beesel
  5. Tasty local wines at vineyard 't Hanik
  6. Get away from it all at Loo Mare Spa

1. Scares during Halloween at Toverland

Think a rollercoaster ride is exciting? Then brace yourself for a visit to Toverland's Halloween Nights. As night falls, shadowy figures suddenly appear everywhere. Hop on the Ghost Train for a witty ride or stroll through one of the pitch-black mine tunnels - if you dare. There are no less than six Scare Zones and Haunted Experiences you can experience in Toverland during Halloween. Sound a little too scary to you? During the day, the atmosphere is more family-friendly. Creepily cosy, you could also say. The park is decorated with thousands of pumpkins and you can visit 'spooky' shows.

  • You'll celebrate Halloween at Toverland from 4 October to 2 November
  • Halloween Days is suitable for children aged 12 and under. You can visit these festivities during the day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • For Halloween Nights, the recommended age is 12 years and above. This spooky party takes place on 4, 11 to 13, 15 to 19, 25 and 26, 31 October and 1 November from 6pm to 11pm

2. Back in time in open-air museum village De Locht

Step back in time this autumn holiday at De Locht: Northern Limburg's open-air museum village. Volunteers - dressed in old costumes - bring to life stories of the region's past. You can get a taste of what rural life used to be like, from the kitchen with its old-fashioned tiles to the yard where the smell of wood and straw wafts through. In the small old butter factory, which looks like a simple shed, Friesland Campina grew into the big name it is today. And did you know you can also visit a medieval kitchen garden? De Locht open-air museum is fun for young and old alike. Children can dress up in old-fashioned caps, dresses and blouses and play 'school' in an old-fashioned classroom. Thus, with memories of the past, new memories are made.

  • Opening hours: from April to October from 10am to 5pm (Tuesday to Sunday), from November to March from 10am to 5pm (Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday)
  • Tip: near De Locht open-air museum is Mind Mystery, an experience museum full of illusions. Fun to combine with your visit to De Locht

3. Visit Colourful Autumn in Arcen Castle Gardens

In the middle of the charming village of Arcen lies one of Europe's most versatile flower and plant parks: Kasteeltuinen Arcen. In autumn, the gardens are at their best. Then it feels as if nature is unpacking one last time before going into hibernation. During Herfstig! you will enjoy picturesque views of red-yellow-brown trees, autumn flowers and seasonal decorations. One of the eye-catchers is the famous 'flower peacock', decorated with purple-orange flowers in autumn. Bring your camera: you'll easily fill your roll of golden pictures here.

  • Herfstig! will take place from 1 October to 2 November 2025 from 10am to 6pm
  • Golden times tip: from 10 October to 1 November, stick around after 6pm for the beloved Enchanted Gardens. With nightfall, the castle gardens are transformed into fairy tales with lights and music

5. Enjoy a wine tasting at vineyard 't Hanik

The Maasduinen are not just a place for hiking or cycling. You will also find a vineyard: 't Hanik. Owners Ritsaart and Mariëlle Blaisse call it their "hobby that got out of hand". Various grape varieties grow in the vineyard, from white Souvignier Gris to red Cabernet Cortis. Ritsaart and Mariëlle grow their grapes organically as much as possible. You can taste their efforts during a wine tasting at the vineyard. Extra fun to combine with a guided tour: then you can hear the enthusiastic story of the owners themselves. Prefer no alcohol? Fresh apple juice is also made at 't Hanik.

  • You can book a wine tasting and/or tour from eight people. Make an appointment via the website of Vineyard 't Hanik

6. Loo Mare Spa: a moment of complete... nothing

You don't always have to plan your autumn holidays full of busy activities - not even during your visit to North Limburg. Relaxing is often just as refreshing. Loo Mare Spa in Merselo is a wonderful place for that. In the private spa, surrounded by nature, you will find everything you need to unwind. Sweat out your cares in the sauna, step - literally - into a warm bath or plop down in the lounge area. Rather not leave after one day? We understand. Luckily, you can book a night in the Floating Tiny House: a small floating house on the water. From Loo Mare Spa, you'll come back reborn no matter what.
