1. Limburg Museum
2. Van Bommel van Dam
3. Limburgs Schutterij Museum

1. Limburg Museum

From mammoth bones to Roman treasures. At the Limburgs Museum, you believe the history of Limburg and our country's first inhabitants in an interactive way. Fun for the whole family. For the kids? They go on a journey through time with an activity book full of assignments. Exciting and educational. The museum is located at a place full of stories: once a city wall, later a railway line, now a place of culture. Even the oldest petrol station (Ut Tankstation, as we call it) in the Netherlands is still there and you can just pop down there for a drink. Architect Jeanne Dekkers was inspired by all those layers of history. So will you soon. Just come and have a look.

2. museum van Bommel van Dam

Within walking distance of the Limburgs Museum, another fine museum awaits you. Welcome to Van Bommel van Dam. The museum owes that name to the Van Bommel-van Dam couple . Two art lovers who donated their collection to the city, giving Venlo its own museum of modern art (the first in Limburg!) in 1971. Located in Julianapark until 2017, since 2021 it can be found in Venlo's fully renovated, old post office. A place full of modern and contemporary art. Stroll past colourful paintings, extraordinary art installations and photography that will make you think. The beauty? The exhibitions change regularly, so every time you step inside, you discover something new.

3. Limburgs Schutterij Museum

We like to keep traditions alive in northern Limburg. In the monastic village of Steyl, just below Venlo, archery is still very much alive. A militia? That's one of those clubs of old that protected the village from outside mischief. Now it is mainly a cosy association full of shooting competitions, parades and marksmen's festivals. At the Limburgs Schutterij Museum, you can taste this folklore for yourself. Step inside the 'sjöttershoés', as we call the shooting house. There you can see uniforms, flags, king's silver and weapons that show how marksmen once protected villages and towns. Even though there is no defence today, togetherness has remained. Have a chat with a volunteer and you'll get some funny anecdotes. Now that is special.

An extra golden moment

Not everything art hangs in there. In Venlo, you will discover colourful street art in surprising places. Our tip? Get 'n coffee to go at MOCCA and enjoy deliciously your own scavenger hunt. Marvel at the 90-metre-long 'Mooder Maas' at the Lage Loswal. Find 'One Love' on Picardiestraat or scavenge for the 'Mural Begijnengang'. These artificial ones bring ordinary walls to life and tell stories about locals and their traditions. You will discover the works and more while walking the public art route through Venlo city centre.
