At 't Ham, you walk through a quiet stream valley with meanders, wooded banks, bird sounds and views of the Groote Molenbeek. Wet, rugged and surprisingly close to Horst. Especially after a fresh shower, this area feels extra pure.
Who is this a real getaway for?
This is the place for you if you fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle for a while. Ideal for walkers, birdwatchers, couples, photographers and families who don’t need an amusement park to enjoy something special. You don’t have to look far here to find that lovely feeling of being outdoors. It starts the moment you step through the swing gate.
When will you visit?
On a dry spring day or in early autumn, this is really lovely. Then you can hear the birds well, the paths are often just a little finer and you have all the space you need to look around quietly. After rain, 't Ham feels wilder and wetter, but also more beautiful in its own way. Be sure to wear shoes that are allowed to get dirty, because mud is just part of the deal here.
What to expect.
In ’t Ham, you’ll walk through a varied stretch of countryside where the wet stream valley of the Groote Molenbeek meets the drier Reulsberg. It is precisely this contrast that makes this area so delightful. Along the way, you’ll look out over the water, spot a kingfisher if you’re lucky, and hear life all around you. Did you know that the stream has been allowed to meander again here, making the landscape feel more natural?
Feel free to allow one to one and a half hours for your visit if you’re walking the Landschapspad. This route is approximately 4 to 5 kilometres long and starts at the Staatsbosbeheer car park on Hesselenweg. You’re right near Horst here, but once you’re in the area, it feels surprisingly quiet and open, with wet grassland, hedgerows and the stream meandering peacefully through the landscape. Parking is free. If you’re bringing your dog, it’s welcome, but in the ’t Ham nature reserve your dog must be kept on a lead; in the northern part of the area, according to Staatsbosbeheer, dogs are allowed off the lead, provided they are under control and the signs permit it. Good to know: this isn’t an easy place to walk for those with mobility issues. The paths can be muddy, and it’s actually recommended that you wear sturdy shoes. Bring some food and drink with you, as this is a nature outing with no catering facilities in the area itself.
When are you welcome?
You’re welcome here all year round. Staatsbosbeheer states that the nature reserves in North Limburg are open all year round. That’s what makes ’t Ham such a lovely spot for a spontaneous morning stroll, a refreshing afternoon walk or a quick trip outside at the end of your day. Do always check the signs at the entrance for the access rules.
Our tip for your visit
Head out early, preferably in the early hours of the morning. It is even quieter here then, there is often some moisture hanging over the grass and the view over the stream feels just a little more beautiful. Especially if you like to spot birds, you'll be in the right place.
Region tip: The icon in the neighbourhood
Combine your walk with a visit to Toverland in Sevenum. That combination is golden. First, the tranquillity of ’t Ham, with mud on your shoes and the wind blowing along the stream, then on to one of North Limburg’s best-known icons for an afternoon full of excitement and fun. It’s precisely that contrast that makes your day even more enjoyable. Have a look here: https://www.toverland.com/
