Weerdbeemden

In Weerdbeemden, you walk past water, reeds, rugged banks and quiet paths right by the Meuse. This is one of those places where you automatically slow down, precisely because the landscape is ever-changing and the birds draw all the attention here.

Who is this a real getaway for?

Weerdbeemden is really nice for you if you like a walk without crowds, but with lots of nature experiences. This is a wonderful place for birdwatchers, peace seekers, photographers and hikers who like to discover a less pronounced, but for that very reason surprisingly beautiful part of northern Limburg. Even if you like to take a breath of fresh air along the Meuse and don't need much besides good shoes and some time, this is the place to be.

When will you visit?

This place feels different in every season, which is precisely what makes a visit so enjoyable. In spring and summer, the area is full of life and water, reeds and vegetation immediately draw your gaze. In autumn, the landscape takes on something rough and quiet. And when the weather is wet, you really notice that this is an area with character, because then it can be swampy. So wear sturdy shoes and don't let a bit of mud stop you.

What to expect.

At Weerdbeemden, you walk through a diverse marshland area along the Meuse, created by clay extraction for a brickworks. In the years that followed, it grew into a rich nature reserve with lots of flora and fauna. Did you know that Galloway cattle also provide natural grazing here? This gives the area that rugged, open character that makes so many hikers and birdwatchers happy.

For your visit, one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours is a fine guideline, depending on whether you only walk a short round or take a longer route via Kessel or Kessel-Veers. The atmosphere here is calm, natural and a little rugged, with water, ponds, banks and Maas landscape blending in nicely. Parking is best arranged at a starting point near Kessel-Eik or via a route from Kessel or Kessel-Veers. Dogs can come along on a walk, but keep them under control and give nature some space. For those with reduced mobility, it is good to know that the surface here can be unpaved and swampy in wet weather. Dietary requirements are less of an issue here, of course, as there are no catering facilities in the middle of the area, so taking something tasty along the way is just smart.

When are you welcome?

Weerdbeemden is a nature reserve where you are especially welcome when you feel like fresh air, silence and a nice walk. There are no fixed checkout times or catering moments. That is exactly what makes this such a nice place for a spontaneous walk in the countryside. If you want an activity with extra explanation or if you want to go out with a group, initiatives such as a clean-up action or nature walk regularly pop up in the region.

Our tip for your visit

Prefer to go out here after a few dry days, especially if you want to keep walking. Especially then, you will enjoy the waterfront trails extra without too much mud under your shoes. Bring binoculars, too, because in an area like this, there is often more happening than meets the eye.

Region tip: The icon in the neighbourhood

Combine your walk with Kasteel De Keverberg in Kessel. That combo is gold because you first take in the silence, water and rugged nature of Weerdbeemden and then you can move on to a place full of history, views and village atmosphere. So you get two very different sides of this region in one day.
