German War Cemetery

Visit a place of deep impression and reflection at the largest German military cemetery in the world. In a vast, wooded landscape of almost 30 hectares, tens of thousands of distinctive grey crosses stand, together carrying a powerful message of peace and reconciliation to every generation

Who is this a real getaway for?
This is an essential site for anyone interested in history, culture and moments of reflection. Whether you are on an educational trip with school, a hiker seeking peace in nature, or a history buff wanting to discover the personal stories behind World War II; the serene atmosphere of this place leaves no one unmoved.

When do you visit?
In the early morning, when the dew lies over the endless rows of graves, the silence here is almost tangible and very impressive. Every season of the year gives the landscape a different look: from the fresh green memorial trees in spring to the moody, golden-brown hues in autumn. It is a place where the tranquillity of nature helps to process the heavy history.

What to expect.
Expect an overwhelming sight of over 31,500 fallen soldiers who have found their final resting place here, each marked with its own cross. The austere architecture and central memorial square with the large cross form the heart of this memorial. Did you know that this is the only place in the Netherlands where almost all German war dead are brought together? Feel free to take two to three hours for a respectful walk around the grounds and a visit to the information centre. Ample free parking is available right at the entrance. The entire site is laid out with paved paths, making it easily accessible for the disabled and prams. Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a short leash, out of respect for the graves at this special place.

When are the gates open?
You can visit this impressive memorial site daily, as the gates are open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The associated visitor centre operates its own opening hours for additional information and educational programmes, so be sure to take a peek inside there when you arrive.
