A protected dragonfly paradise in the Maasduinen
Between Lomm and Velden lies one of the region’s most water-rich natural gems: the Ravenvennen. This vast area of almost 400 hectares forms part of De Maasduinen National Park and, as a Natura 2000 site, enjoys protected status. In 2011, it was even designated as the Netherlands’ second official dragonfly reserve. Thanks to the dozens of ponds and the exceptional water quality, the area teems with rare dragonflies and damselflies in spring and summer.
Wandering past fens, heathland and river dunes
The landscape is constantly changing. One moment you’re walking across the rolling crests of river dunes with views of purple heathland; the next, you’re strolling through fragrant coniferous forests or standing on the banks of a mirror-smooth fen where water lilies are in bloom. Well-marked walking, cycling and bridle paths take you through the entire area. The special dragonfly trail also takes you past the spots teeming with birds and insects, with handy information boards along the way.
Why are we recommending this spot?
The Ravenvennen combine immense biodiversity with unparalleled tranquillity. Because the area is so vast and varied, you feel as though you’re far away from civilisation. The interplay of the open water, the sandy hills and the rich wildlife makes every walk here a journey of discovery.
4.1
What a surprising and peaceful piece of nature in North Limburg. The combination of the glistening water of the many fens and the wooded hills is beautiful. We spotted an incredible number of dragonflies and waterbirds during our walk. Highly recommended for those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers.
Thanks to the high water quality and the variety of fens, the area is an ideal habitat for dozens of species of dragonflies and damselflies. In 2011, it was therefore officially designated as the second Dragonfly Reserve in the Netherlands.
On Veenweg in Lomm and Rijdtstraat in Velden, there are starting points and car parks where various signposted walking routes begin.
Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead. This helps to protect the many birds, reptiles and other animals that live around the fens and heathlands.
