At the Lichtenberg
Until well into the 19th century, the medieval city wall could be seen where these warehouse-style homes now stand. Construction of this wall began shortly after Venlo was granted city rights in 1343. For centuries, the wall formed part of the city’s extensive fortifications. In 1867, Venlo lost its status as a fortified town, causing the city wall to disappear from the streetscape. Above ground, that is, for the wall has been preserved beneath ground level to this very day. The construction of the current buildings has taken into account the jagged course of the city wall.
