You don’t need a boating licence. After a brief briefing, you’ll set off onto the River Maas yourself for a relaxing trip with family, friends or colleagues.

Discover Venlo from the water

From the city harbour, you can sail past the Maasboulevard and the town hall. If you opt for a longer trip, you can continue on towards the monastery village of Steyl. From the water, you’ll see the surroundings in a slightly different light.

Meanwhile, you can sink back comfortably into the cushions, listen to the water lapping against the boat and enjoy the view together. There’s no rush. All that’s left is to decide who gets to take the helm.

Boating without a licence

The boats are easy to operate and can accommodate up to six people. Children are included in this maximum. The main booker and the person at the helm must be at least 21 years old. A boating licence is not required. You’ll receive a briefing before setting off, so you can head out onto the water with confidence.

A sloop is not a speedboat. You sail gently along the Meuse, taking care to avoid other boats, recreational users and jetties. That’s actually exactly what a day on the water is all about.

Choose a sailing time that suits you

You can hire a boat for two, three or six hours. A two-hour trip gives you a lovely glimpse of Venlo from the River Maas. A three-hour trip allows you more time to explore the surroundings and the villages along the Maas. Those opting for a six-hour trip can head towards Arcen and enjoy the river and the countryside to the full along the way. Or choose a full-day programme including a visit to the Hertog Jan Brewery. Fuel is included in the hire price.

Out on the water together

A boat trip is ideal for a family day out, a get-together with friends, a date or a relaxing afternoon with the family. There are also options for company outings and larger groups. For groups of thirteen or more, you can enquire about a complete group package including food and drink. Before or after your trip, you can enjoy a meal at Restaurant De Werf, right next to the boarding point.

The sloops are particularly suitable for those who want to enjoy a leisurely cruise and spend time together. Are you looking for speed or a more active boating experience? Then a different type of boat would probably be a better choice.

What should you bring?

Dress for the weather and, on sunny days, bring sun cream, sunglasses and plenty of water. An extra cardigan or jacket is no luxury, even on warm days. It can feel a bit cooler out on the water.

Good to know

The pick-up point is at Restaurant De Werf at Werf 1 in Venlo. It’s about a ten-minute walk from Venlo Station. If you’re coming by car, you can park in one of the pay-and-display car parks around Maasboulevard and the city centre. A deposit is required for the hire.
