Even if you are walking into Gennep for the first time, this is one of those places that will help you get a better read on the town. After all, there is much more history here under your feet than you might think at first glance.

When will you visit?

The Zandpoort monument fits perfectly on a dry day when you feel like taking a tour of historic Gennep. In spring and autumn, this is especially nice, as you will be strolling quietly through the streets. But also on a sunny summer day this is a nice stopover, especially if you combine it with the city walk or a visit to Museum Het Petershuis.

What to expect.

Here you are not standing at just any spot in the street, but on the spot where Gennep's largest city gate once stood. Its contours are reflected in the pavement and in the semicircular shape of the monument. The app brings the story even closer. Did you know that as early as 1732 Gennep was the first town in what would later become the Netherlands to be cadastrically surveyed?

Count on a short stop if you only view the monument. If you add the 2.5-kilometre city walk or the 2.2-kilometre wheelchair route, it automatically becomes a nice longer tour of the city centre. Here you are among old streets, shops and remnants of the fortified town, with free parking in places like Martinushof, De Poel or Melkstraatje, although in some places a blue zone applies. Also nice: the route through historic Gennep runs on paved paths and is easily accessible. For dogs and dietary requirements, the monument itself has no separate facilities; that depends mainly on the walk or restaurant stop you attach to it.
