Het Schuitwater is a remarkably diverse nature reserve that formed around a cut-off channel of the River Meuse. When the river changed course centuries ago, stagnant water remained, in which thick layers of lowland peat formed. Small-scale peat extraction in the eighteenth century led to the reappearance of open pools and fairy-tale-like marsh forests. Today, you’ll find a rare combination of soaking-wet peat bogs and bone-dry woodland and heathland on the higher sand ridges.
Wandering between marshes and heathland
During your walk, you’ll meander along sandy paths beside open pools of water and follow wooden boardwalks straight through the dense marsh woodland. With a bit of luck, you might spot kingfishers, herons and unusual dragonflies along the reed beds. Those who explore the area further will discover various marked routes, such as the Lottummer Schuitwater and the Broekhuizerbroek, which take you past fragrant pine forests and tranquil heathlands.

An incredibly beautiful and surprising nature reserve in North Limburg. One moment you’re walking across an open heathland, and the next you’re standing on a wooden walkway between the water and the marsh forest. Very peaceful and perfect for those who love birds and nature photography.
Frequently asked questions
Car parks have been set up along the Horsterweg between Melderslo and Broekhuizen and on the Schuitwaterweg in Lottum. Several signposted walking routes start directly from these locations.
Dogs are very welcome, provided they are kept on a lead so as not to disturb the birds and wildlife in the area.
The main routes consist partly of sandy paths and wooden walkways. After rainfall, some sections may be muddy, making the area less suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs with small wheels.
