Ask AI about the highlight of theatre history and the answer is, without a trace of doubt: Hamlet. This is no surprise: Shakespeare's play is a virtuoso revenge drama that deals with timeless moral dilemmas around love, madness, creativity and death.
We see a dozen robots take over the theatre: a motley mix of intelligent hoovers, bionic quadrupeds and androids in existential crisis. In an interpretation that is as witty as it is confrontational, the robots attempt to reconstruct the world-famous play, like shards of a broken vase. They attempt to lose themselves in their roles, but at the same time hyper-self-consciously reflect on the theatrical forms they deploy, while exploring through the iconic characters what it means to be human.
Just as Hamlet once stood on the threshold between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, today we are in a transition to a digital age.
In the renowned intelligent style of De Warme Winkel and in a very free adaptation, is this world-renowned play once again able to signify a major change? Will our current world view, like that of the Middle Ages back then, soon prove to be completely outdated?
In a monumental setting R2D2_or_not_2B2 is the Hamlet of the 21st century: as timeless as it is confrontationally topical.
For the first time, we cross swords with the repertory theatre at De Warme Winkel. Previously, we intertwined contemporary issues with iconic pieces like Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps or Pina Bausch's Café Müller. Now it is the turn of Shakespeare's holy grail.
Press about De Warme Winkel Het Parool I "The most exciting and consistently interesting theatre group in the Netherlands." Volkskrant I "The most idiosyncratic theatre group imaginable." Telegraaf I "A theatre group that will take you into your heart forever." De Standaard I "For years, the most relevant theatre company from the Netherlands." NRC I "Unadulteratedly highbrow, but at the same time accessible and infectious, thanks to their humour, irony and self-mockery."
