Mama'ku - From Jakarta to the Moluccas

Two films, one quest. We follow daughters as they search with their mother for answers about family, origins and a hushed-up past. The programme includes the short fiction film SUDFAH and the documentary MAMA'KU, in which themes of migration, identity, intergenerational trauma and mother-daughter relationships come together in a penetrating way.

Filmmaker Sven Peetoom has been exposing the consequences of Dutch colonial history in Indonesia for years, as previously in INDISCH ZWIJGEN and (just last year) TUSSEN WAL AND SCHIP.
In this film, he follows choreographer and dancer Cheroney Pelupessy as she travels to Jakarta with her mother. It is the place where Cheroney's mother grew up, but always remained anxiously silent about. During the trip, they try to face her traumatic past together and thus come closer together. What begins as a search for a forgotten family history unfolds into a probing portrait about tensions, trauma and the hope of connection.
