Angela (Olivia Wilde) and Joe’s (Seth Rogen) marriage has been in a rut for some time and is characterised by neurotic bickering. Their eccentric upstairs neighbours, Hawk (Edward Norton) and Pina (Penélope Cruz), turn out to be particularly active at night, much to Joe’s annoyance. When Angela invites them over for dinner, Joe sees this as the perfect opportunity to confront them. What follows is an evening full of unexpected twists and turns, which none of them will forget in a hurry…
Filmmaker and actress Olivia Wilde (BOOKSMART, DON’T WORRY DARLING) and screenwriters Will McCormack and Rashida Jones based this comedy on the Spanish film SENTIMENTAL, which has already been remade in several countries. THE INVITE is a hilarious take on sex, relationships and marriage, constantly keeping the viewer guessing.
_____
‘Full of entertaining, sharp dialogue. A rollercoaster ride full of rapid shifts in tone and biting arguments.’
★★★★ de Volkskrant
'Both comic and serious; registers between which Wilde skilfully navigates.'
★★★★ NRC
'Witty dialogue, a single setting and brilliant actors. Has a lot in common with the Mike Nichols classic *Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?*.'
★★★★ VPRO Cinema
'What’s particularly clever about *The Invite* is what the film does once the playfulness and mischief have evaporated. From that moment on, every mask is cast aside and harsh, confrontational words fly through the flat. Brilliant.'
