Samar and the frightened king

Tuesday 17 November

Samar and the frightened king is a comic, magical-realist show about a king who is terrified of everything ... but especially elephants.

They are coming. Everyone knows that. And exactly that is the problem. The king locks himself in his castle and lets himself be whispered to by Fear, who sees danger everywhere. To keep the elephants out, he builds walls and makes up rules. Everyone must be the same, speak the same, think the same. To deviate is dangerous. Everyone joins in. Except Samar.

Samar is not afraid, not of elephants and certainly not of the king. She does not want to follow rules that no one really understands. She also sees Fear, but does not take it too seriously. As the king tries ever more frenetically to maintain control, Samar brings everything to heel.

Samar and the frightened king is a humorous and touching fairy tale about fear and power, about control and imagination and about what happens when one person decides not to participate.
