From the land to your plate

The potato has been an integral part of life in the North Limburg countryside for generations. During this day, you’ll see how potatoes used to be harvested, sorted and stored. On the museum grounds, potato sorting machines and harvesters will be in action. You’ll also learn about different potato varieties.

Fancy a bite to eat after all that exploring? At the museum restaurant Het Steeltje, there are various potato dishes on the menu. Why not try ‘riefkook’, Limburg potato pancakes, or simply go for a portion of golden-yellow chips?

You can also buy potatoes and fresh vegetables at the historic auction clock – just as they used to do at the auction in days gone by.

Get stuck in with potatoes yourself

There’s plenty for children to do too. They can pick potatoes themselves in the fields. This gives them a little taste of how their grandparents used to help out during the harvest.

At the LochtKids activity, children make their own little potato man. Using googly eyes, pipe cleaners, beads and other materials, each potato is given its own unique face. Ready? Then, of course, you can take your little work of art home with you.

Music amongst the machines

Whilst the machinery is running and the chips are frying on the site, Bigband Noord-Limburg will provide the music. This leaves plenty of time to look around, sample some food and enjoy the day together.

Potato Day is ideal for families looking to enjoy an experience together. It’s also perfect for those with a passion for local history and traditional farm life. The De Locht Museum Village doesn’t just let you look back at the past; on this day, you can also hear, taste and experience it for yourself.
