With a spirited performance by Spanish star Carmen Maura, Maryam Touzani explores in CALLE MÁLAGA the stubbornness of old age and the unexpected encounters that make life sparkle again. After her acclaimed films ADAM (2020) and THE BLUE CAFTAN (2023), Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani returns with CALLE MÁLAGA. Touzani's grandmother is the inspiration for this Spanish-language drama, set in Tangier and dedicated to her.
The film tells the story of Maria Angeles, a 79-year-old woman who is visited by her daughter Clara, a nurse living in Madrid. Clara, who is emotionally confused and in financial trouble, has decided to sell the parental home where Maria has lived all her life. Trying to resist her daughter's decision, Maria rediscovers her city and finds a romantic spark that will change her life.
CALLE MÁLAGA sets this warm city scene against the estranged mother and daughter. Legendary actress Carmen Maura shines in a sparkling leading role, in which she embodies the determination of a woman willing to do anything to keep her home and possessions - even if she has to reinvent herself to stay true to her past.
