1. Nonnevotten, a loop of happiness

Imagine a slightly crispy exterior with a sugar coating that melts on your lips, airy and soft inside. You will discover that a Nonnevot is delicious after the first bite. The Limburg delicacy in the shape of a loop with a loose knot originates from Sittard. Here, it was served to French commanders as early as the seventeenth century and slowly but surely the delicacy found its way to northern Limburg. The regional product used to be eaten mainly during 'Vasteloavend' and New Year. Now you just score it at the bakery all year round. One of our favourite bakeries for a loop of happiness is Patisserie Broekmans.

  • Nonnevotten are mainly on sale during the period of Vastelaovend from January to mid-February/March.

2. White asparagus: gold from Limburg soil

White asparagus, or white gold. They are scarce, available only in spring and are hand-picked from the ground as if they were treasures. And fair? They kind of are. As soon as spring arrives, you see roadside stalls with this regional product everywhere. The classic Limburg recipe? Cooked with a pinch of salt, served with ham, a boiled egg and creamy butter sauce. If you want to cook it yourself, just drive past Van Hegelsom Asperges in Grubbenvorst, Martens Asperges BV in Tienray, Ingenbleek Asperges in Siebengewald or drive past the asparagus beds located around Camperplaats InDeVerte. There they are fresh asparagus waiting for you. Straight from the land.

  • In North Limburg, the asparagus season runs from mid-April to 24 June.

3. Red summer crowns from Horst

Get the tastiest strawberries directly from the farmer. In Horst aan de Maas, millions of strawberries are harvested every year. The juicy summer kings love the rich sandy soil. With the sun on their heads and a little love from the grower, these red rascals grow into little taste buds. Fresh from the land, they end up in farm shops and roadside fruit vending machines. Just stop, insert a coin (don't forget your cash) and you have a box of gold in your hands. Enjoy your meal, or goeë aete, as we say in Horst in Limburg. For a day out with the whole family, visit Aardbeienland. Stroll through the strawberry fairytale forest, solve puzzles and learn all about this red fruit from the gnomes in the park. Now that you know all about the strawberry, you have earned an ice cream sundae with strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream.

  • The strawberry season in Limburg runs from May to September.

5. A bucket of blueberries

Blueberries grow in abundance in Mook and Middelaar, Venray and Horst aan de Maas. They love the acidic sandy soil and we have no shortage of that here. Come to blueberry country in Molenhoek and see for yourself. In season, you can pick them yourself. Bring your own bucket (just have it weighed) or pick one on location. Time to pick. Tasting is allowed along the way because, of course, you want to know what you are harvesting. Ready for a break? Take a seat on the terrace and enjoy local berry juice together. Don't forget to take a look in the shop too. As it is full of blueberry honey, blueberry wine, blueberry jam and many more goodies.

  • The blueberry season runs from June to August.

6. Limburg 'vloaj' from the fist

Whether 'tis weekend, a birthday or just any occasion. A Limburg 'vloaj' is part of it. With a base of dough, a filling of fruit, rice or pudding, topped off with strands of dough or crumbs. That pastry makes for golden moments at the kitchen table. Can't choose? Rice flan with whipped cream and chocolate flakes or cherry flan is always good. In Venlo, sit well on the terrace of Café de Klep. Order a cup of coffee and a slice of flan. Would you rather take some sweets home? Then drop in at Banketbakkerij Lamers in Venlo, Arts Bakkers in Gennep or Boulangerie Gommans in Horst. Tip: eat your piece of flan the way we do, on the side.

  • In Limburg, you eat flan all year round. Nice to know: fruit flans often follow the fruit seasons. For example, you see a lot of strawberry flan in May to July and apple flan often in September to November.
